Benue south: when beibery is passed as a gift

This week, we witnessed the distribution of cars by Senator Patrick Abba Moro to the zone C chairman and the nine local government chapter chairmen of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Idoma land which were reported as ‘gifts.’

But on a second look, can they be described as gifts?

A gift, going by the general meaning, is something given willingly to someone without expecting any form of payment in return whether in cash or kind. It is therefore dishonest to describe any gesture towards a public official who can influence things in one’s favour as such.

The English language, with its rich vocabulary has a name for such gestures:

It says, “the offering, giving, soliciting or receiving of any item of value as a means of influencing the actions of an individual holding a public office or legal duty especially with the intent to influence the discharge of another’s official duties is called bribery.

Between the two definitions above, it is not difficult telling which description fits the gesture by the Senator.

The 10 cars were not given to support public institutions like, hospitals, security outfits, schools and others that have such grave needs but were given to party officials who are statutory delegates in the primary elections of the party.

This year, Benue South otherwise known as Zone C, was bedeviled by security challenges but the Senator was nowhere to be found. A case in point was the invasion of Ado LGA by the Fulani Gunmen where hundreds of people and particularly Izzi were massacred.
Like Emperor Nero who fiddled away when Rome was on fire, the Senator was frolicking in far away Akwa-Ibom State while Ado, that voted for him massively was wallowing in blood!

Two tankers also exploded in parts of his constituency, killing many and destroying property but the Senator was nowhere to be found. He was only casually sighted in one of the scenes of the accident and made empty promises, as usual!

Chris Ochapa, this your view is purely based on sentiments. Unfortunately, u forgot to state that the same people who voted him to the Senate, who were key players in the nine LGAs of Zone C are the beneficiaries of these gift items.
What made u think, gift donated to the institutions u listed above, won’t amount to bribery towards general elections ?
Instead of appreciating our Distinguished Senator ABBA Moro for his selflessness, u re trying to humiliate urself that u re embarrassing him. Very cheap of ur person my brother.
Cast your mind back to when the the tanker explosion rocks part of his Constituency, the Distinguished Senator came to that venue and donated motorcycles to some persons that lost their motorbikes to the inferno. It was published, and you did not post it as bribery, peharps, because u did not get a glimpse of that.
The General Hospital, Obarike Ito Road he constructed down to Adutu Obi’s Palace is equally not bribery, the thirty million naira he allocated for Odiapa Bridge at Obi LGA is somewhat not bribery too, meanwhile, these community voted for his in 2019 and could be influenced by that gesture.
The nine LGA PDP Chairmen voted in 2019 delegate election and are still his Party faithfuls at that level, how can such a gesture be misconstrued for bribery my Dear brother. These Party Chairmen are being given these cars to facilitate their movement during these rainy season, moreover the elections are fast approaching and they need to operate beyond certain level now as leaders in their various LGAs.
