DCP Abba Kyari and a close look at the nigerian police

If the FBI are not involved in the recent Husspuppi And Abba Kyari fraud case, this whole brouhaha about the case wouldn’t have lasted for 24 hours.

By George Onmonya Daniel

The Nigerian Police is underfunded by the government and even when funds are available it is usually channeled to projects that would benefit those who are in charge, most of these monies are looted by the bosses and those privileged to be in departments where they have access to these funds. This is common knowledge.

All police stations in Nigeria are left to fund their activities through extortions or asking people with cases to fund their cases by paying for it. The police are aware of it and likewise the government, and the public. Take a case to the police you are expected to pay for their transport, feeding and others, the person you reported is extorted to bail themselves even though most stations have BAIL IS FREE written boldly on the walls as you enter. And THE POLICE IS YOUR FRIEND.

A lady recently reach out to me for help. Her son was killed in Lokogoma, Abuja, in March 2021 at night close to the estate she lives in, just after Game Village in the road to Galadimawa. She suspected some of his friends may be involved. Since March 2021 that her son was murdered, stabbed to death by his assailant(s), the police woman in charge of the case simply refused to do much about it, not even inviting some of the suspects for questioning. This woman finally wrote petition for the case to be transferred and when it was finally transferred she told the mother of the deceased that the reason why she didn’t follow up the case was because of funds. The police do not provide funds for such investigations. Today after transferring the case to Force Headquarters, she is willing to finance the case to get a closure. That is mostly how things work with the Nigerian Police all over the nation.

Just before the Corona Virus lockdown, a friend of mine came to me to help over someone who owed him N2m and is refusing to pay. We ended up going to report the case to the Nigerian Police. They charged this man for money to get a warrant of arrest, money for tracking the suspect and some fees for themselves before they start their job in Wuse Zone 3 Police Division.

The Policemen patrolling on the roads stop vehicles, beg for money or look for minor offenses that is not even police work and demand for money or waste someone’s time, they intimidate people with their AK47 and most people end up paying.

In the case of units like Abba Kyari, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), known for their notorierity, they operate like a mafia cartel. They extort criminals and let them go, extort members of the public and kill anyone who is on their way and for fun. They are known for torturing people and the sadistic ways they went about their job, harrasing more innocent people than criminals resulted to the #ENDSARS protest.

The Nigerian Police is one of the biggest criminal organizations in Nigeria. The public knows it. Abba Kyari and Husspuppi’s imbroglio is simply how the police operates, everyone knows it.
