What kind of people are we? By Aliyu Nuhu

What kind of people are we?

When DSS,EFCC or FBI brought up charges against someone,we first of all check his origin, tribe and religion before drawing conclusion.

If he is our own we declare him innocent even if he is guilty. If he is not our own we declare him guilty even if he is innocent.

Yet we complain of corruption in our society while inviting criminals to ethnic cleavages for refuge. And we still want to have a corruption free society.

The law is blind. Crime has no tribe or religion. Unless we learn to see criminals for what they are,we will never have a progressive society.

I have read people celebrating the trouble of DCP Abba Kyari, they are mostly from South. To them he is guilty as charged.

I have seen people extolling DCP Abba Kyari,to them he is innocent. Some are even saying his travails were efforts to undermine the North and Islam.

That is Nigeria’s tragedy. And the people making this insinuation are educated people. They are on Instagram and Facebook.

Where am I heading to? Abba Kyari is not guilty yet,it will be wrong to preempt the courts. But I will not stick my neck for him,a serving policeman that is all over social media flaunting his wealth for the world to see.

It is difficult defending a man that is enforcer of law posting pictures on social media with the same people he is supposed to arrest. I am also careful because his indictment came from FBI. Everyone knows the American federal police is not frivolous. Tribe and religion don’t count in their investigation. They don’t charge a person without airtight case against him. The moment they say “you are under arrest for so so crime” just know that you are done. I will not stick my neck for a senior officer suspended by the police. The Police Service Commission must have considered his case strong enough for suspension. The police would never suspend Abba Kyari if the evidence before it was not strong.

To build a strong, virile and progressive society we must change our approach to nation building. We must stop ethnicizing crimes and we must allow the courts to do their work. There is no innocent person when accused before court verdict just like there is no guilty person before the court makes its pronouncement.

Let us be patient and allow the court to declare Abba Kyari guilty or innocent.
