Picture of flood from Yobe State exposes how government have completely neglected the rural areas and how people live in extreme poverty and squalor.
Dr. Mohammed Goje who has done a miracle as Executive Secretary managing disasters as head is State Emergency Managing Agency, wrote this on his Facebook page.
“The Hon. Commissioner MHADM Dr Abubakar G. Iliya led a team to Commiserates with Maisandari, Usmanti, Gaurawa and Kasaisa, all in Damaturu LGA affected by heavy flood due to heavy downpour that occurred through the night of 11th August 2021.
“The Commissioner who went round along with ES SEMA, Damaturu LGA Chair, Adviser to HE on Works and Community leaders, Commiserates with the affected Victims majority of whom are taking refuge within neighbourhood. He further assured the victims that Governor Buni has directed SEMA to immediately respond within available resources and advise further on stabilisation support for them to return home and continue their daily bussiness.
“Assessment is ongoing to ascertain the exact number of victims and this will further inform response and next steps.”
The problem is far beyond what Governor Mai Mala Buni should look into, what he must look into is how these rural people live in the 21st century. Most of these villages have no healthcare centers in Nigeria and one of the major killers are not terminal diseases but very common treatable diseases.
Most of these communities have no pipe borne water. Most of these communities have no good roads linking them to urban areas. Some of them are forgotten except during election.
Picture speaks a thousand words, you can only just look at the pictures to know. Some of these communities have no schools, so their children have to trek kilometers to the neighboring villages to school for those who can afford it.
Most governors before Governor Mai Mala Buni focused on urban development and even at that not so much was achieved in many states across Nigeria. Governor Buni should really focus on rural development.
