What’s wrong with Big Brother Naija? By George onmonya Daniel

I have been a fan of Big Brother Africa and Big Brother Naija show for as long as the shows kicked off. I find the show quite entertaining. But over the years some critics of the show have called for outright ban yet the show continues to get very popular amongst young people and adults alike.

The first group who have called for the ban of Big Brother Africa and Big Brother Naija are religious group and religious individuals who think the show is morally bankrupt and promotes immorality. Both the first Big Brother Africa and Big Brother Naija shows used to show everything except toilet. Housemates were usually shown in the baths taking shower. Outcry from around Africa over that made the show to cancel it. Shower hours are no longer shown on television.

Critics of the show complain that the show doesn’t teach anything but people in the house talking trash and making out. But mostly what disturbs them is the complain that the show is morally corrupt.

Wio says entertainment has to be educational or appeals to what some people see as their standards of morallity? Entertainment needs to entertain and people find the Big Brother Nigeria show very entertaining that fans wait for it all year after the show ends. They never lack sponsors and reek in billions. After the show the participants who are savvy enough to use the fame it brings end up becoming toast of entertainment industry, even state governments, making them youth ambassadors. Hundreds of million of youths have auditioned and applied to be on show since inception.

What the critics are uncomfortable with is the reality that the show is. Overtly religious people don’t want to see the reality that society is being shown live on screen. Older generation have that problem too. The reality that their own children are the same as the people on the show is quite hard to handle. These are the category that worry. Sometimes they try to pressure government to ban the show.

The Big Brother show is very educative and a show where sociologists and psychologists would really gain enough studying human behaviours. It contributes to the field of sociology and psychology where students and people interested in human behaviours can tap from happenings in the house. Why are audience so attracted to the show and its audience keeps growing? There have no shortage of advertising, it is a question media students need answer.

In a country where television contents are needed and local contents are often mediocre contents, the BB Naija content is one of the standardized contents in Nigeria. In a country where millions of young people are jobless it give them a hope, it is one show where a nobody can become somebody.
