The real story behind the killing of ogun bound Hausa/Fulani muslims in Jos

Two days ago a young Fulani man between the age 24 years to 28 years old was arrested by a team of police and roadsafety officials in Akwanga, Nassarawa State, he was carrying many AK47 magazines loaded with bullets and extra-bullets, those who were there and reports said he was on his way to Plateau State to give the ammunitions to his colleagues.

Fulani herdsman caught in Akwanga, Nassarawa State, on his way to supply bullets to his contemporaries in Plateau Statr.

On the night of 3rd August, 2021, protesters stormed Gada Biyu, Jos, setting cars of fire. At least one trailer was burnt to ashes and several cars. When the video hit the social media people started asking why. It turned out Fulani herdsmen have been on rampage attacking Miango area of Jos in a hit and run tactics, killing and withdrawing. The Plateau State government didn’t say or do much or anything about these killings.

Mr. Simon Lalong, Plateau State Governor

It turned out these killings were going on in Irigwe communities. Gada Biyu is a stone throw from where the Ondo bound Hausa/Fulani Muslims were attacked and 27 of them brutallly killed by angry and rampaging youths.

The Fulani herdsmen killings continued unabated. People were attacked and killed in their farms, people going about their daily businesses were killed and the bandits even called some members of the community to brag about it. An audio in circulation recorded a Fulani herdsmen on the phone telling a man he is next as they would be coming for him soon.

The Plateau State governor and the federal government were as usual not only lackadaisical about these killings, but nobody seems to care. The only people who cared were the Irigwe people and as usual they know they had to take their fate into their own hands.

State governors, from Niger to Katsina and Kebbi have been telling their people take up arms and fight the bandits who kill, rape, kidnap and terrorize the people. There is that perception that the Fulani herdsmen are having it all good and rosy because the federal government is backing them. Of course that story may not be completely true but it is widely spread in states where Christians have been under attack over for years.

On 14th August 2021, crowd of sympathizers, family and friends, went to the cemetery at Rock Haven to bury six of their people killed by Fulani herdsmen. After the burial as the crowd headed home, the buses from Bauchi from Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s religious gathering on their way to Ogun, drove into the crowd of mourners. On seeing they were Fulanis and some Hausas, the crowd quickly surrounded the vehicle and wanted to know where they were headed. Some concluded that they had no business being on that road if they were heading to Ogun and that they can only be part of the attackers. In matters of minutes they descended on the Muslims in the vehicles. They occupant of the vehicle scrambled out as they were being attacked. Only few survived. Abour 27 of them were killed. Some media outlets reported 30.
