A lot of President Buhari die hard supporters in his stronghold of Muslim North have expressed shock and disappointment over the ostentatious display of wealth despite poverty in the land over the president’s son wedding.
Who and who in Nigeria stormed Bichi town in Kano State to be at the wedding, with over a hundred private jets park at the Kano International Airport. Former President Goodluck Jonathan was there and Mr. Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and the PDP presidential flagbearer who slugged it out with President Buhari was there. Governors, senators, house of representative members, ministers, and even former minister and one of the ardent critics of Buhari, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode was there.
As Photos of the wedding flooded social media even President Buhari support based were shocked at the oustentatious display of wealth from the wedding of the son of a president who had lived a modest lifestyle or flaunted modesty before he became president. It was this modesty that had endeared this man to the masses, a man they nicknamed “Mai Gaskiya”, man of truth which rather means man undoutable integrity.
Daily Trust Columnist, Gimba Kakanda, simply wrote on his Facebook page:
“It’s not a crime to hold an opulent wedding, but common sense demands sensitivity to the plight of the people when you hold a public office, and specially when you’ve governed quite poorly. Sharing iPhone 12s and iPads as souvenirs at Yusuf Buhari’s wedding is one bad optics, no matter who funded the acquisition of the devices.
“There’s a responsibility that should come with holding public offices, and it’s even more desirable in country this broken. Even if you can afford to do more than Obi Cubana, the moment tax contributes to your welfare, discretion is advised.”
What riled up people in the whole of the episode was the video showing Iphone worth N610,000 being shared as sovenirs.
Angry Nigerians both supporters and those who never supported him are united on this one. It is clear that the image President Buhari sold to the masses in 2015 is completely different from who he is.
