How a disable young man scammed an NGO and people on social media

By George Onmonya Daniel

Mr. Phillip Msonter is a young Tiv man from Benue in his mid twenties. He was obviously a victims of Polio.

Phillip with a phone a donor bought for him after seeing his photo on social media.

Mr. Msonter printed a poster where he looked like he was contesting for Middle Belt students union election in Nassarawa State University. He used it to convince popular Tiv online influencer Mr. Ukan Kurugh who is known for his humanitarian activities, raising money for the sick, vulnerable and less privildeged mostly around Tiv land in Benue State.

Mr. Kurugh seeing a disable young man was comvinced he was a student of Nassarawa State University. He brought his case up on his Facebook page and solicited for help. Some people helped.

Mr. Msonter had informed Mr. Kurugh he needed finacial help to get education material.

“Sadly Mr. Msonter is not a student of NSU but went ahead to print a poster of his election in the University…” Mr. Kurugh who apologised to the general public and those who donated money wrote.

Mr. Kurugh giving Phillip Msonter a phone bought by someone online. The phone has since been retrieved.

Mr. KURUGH’S statement below.

Painfully, I am constrained to retract my earlier post that Philip Msonter is a student of the Nasarawa State University (NSU) Keffi.

When I made the post, many people of goodwill responded and we raised money for the physically challenged. His claim was that he was in need of financial assistance to get education materials.

Sadly, it is found that Philip is not a student of NSU and event went ahead to print posters of his election in the said university. It is most sadly that he changed his mobile line, after he took custody of the phone that we purchased for him through my donor Mummy Angela Uhomoibhi Oriakhi and making it difficult to deliver all materials that were she again sent to him through me from the United States.

Last week, in what appears as one of his fraudulent acts, Philip also came to defraud others and was noticed.

He gave a different address and name from the previous one.

I have collected the phone that was given to him as a NSU student. I am truly confused as to what to do because he is found to be in the habit of using his disability to defraud unsespecting members of the public.

May I apologise for feeding you guys here with wrong information but this was because I wanted to help a physically challenged person and broke my protocols of investigating thoroughly.

I Ukan Kurugh once again plead for mercy/pardon. Cheers
