RUGA: Group kick over Gov. Zulum’s arrangement to site RUGA project in Askira/Uba LG

A group with the name Concerned Citizens of Askira Uba have written to NEWISSUES magazine to express their concerns over the arrangement to site RUGA in Askira Uba local government area of Borno State.

In a press release titled RUGA: Askira/Uba as a Sacrififial Lamb, the group said the move is part of the continous marginalisation of Southern Borno. They accused Governor Zulum of imposing a Muslim-Fulani Local Government Chairman to deliberately make his move easy. They accuse the Borno State government of trying to take farm land belonging to the locals and giving it to the Fulani herdsmen.

“The overwhelming basis for the rejection of RUGA project by most state governors, Social-cultural, and political groups, is that it does not, and will not suit the historical and ancestral heritage of their people. We equally hold the same position.
Askira/Uba is one of the local governments in Southern Borno that is worst hit by the prolonged violent attacks of the dreaded Boko Haram fighters in the Northeast. Our people were and still are, scattered across Borno State and the Nation at large, as their homes were completely burnt down in the cycle of attacks of Boko Haram and their families brutally murdered/abducted by the insurgents.

“Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum is currently executing massive resettlement project in Northern Borno which is targeted at rehabilitating, relocation, and reinstatement of IDPs from the part of the State. We implore the governor to do the same in Southern Borno and Askira/Uba in particular.

“Rather than embarking on multibillion-naira project to the detriment of our people, we call on the governor to invest and utilize the funds to resettle our displaced people in their communities by reconstruction of their houses, provision of social amenities, provision of foodstuffs/cash and creation of a platform to revive their livelihood as he is currently doing in Borno Central and Northern senatorial zones.

“We will continue to voice out grievances and displeasure over the marginalisation of Southern Borno and discrimination against indigenous Christians based on religion and belief. We call on our representatives, at the State and Federal levels, including those in federal cabinet to amplify our concerns.”

Southern Bormo people, especially areas dominated Christians have recently complained of non-inclusion in Borno State government affairs and plot by the state government to stop them from building churches in Maiduguri after a church with complete document was demolished by the Borno State government. Christian Association of Nigeria has asked the Gov. Zulum government to re-build the church.

RUGA: ASKIRA/UBA AS SACRIFICIAL LAMB
It is no longer a tale or rumour that His Excellency Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, the Executive Governor of Borno State is in full support of President Buhari’s RUGA Project, having concluded arrangement to site the multibillion-naira project in Askira/Uba Local Government.
Recall that Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, in his brazen, calculated, and continuous marginalisation of Southern Borno in addition to total disregard for the yearnings of the people of Askira/Uba, imposed Hon. Ahmed Ahidjo Abdullahi, a Fulani, as Executive Chairman of Askira/Uba. One does not need the skill and expertise of a rocket scientist to fathom that the basis upon which a Fulani man was installed on Askira/Uba was for a time such as this. This therefore explains why the Chairman, has with the speed of light laid the land on the slaughter slate to appease his appointee and kindred.
We the people of Askira/Uba have in one voice, unequivocally reject this calculated attempt to deprive the indigenous people of our ancestral farm lands and subject us to the oppression of Fulani herdsmen.
The adverse effect of RUGA will be invasion of Fulani herders to carry out their private business on our ancestral land seized and developed by the resources of Borno State Government. In another dimension, Southern Borno will begin to experience rampant kidnapping, banditry, rape of our daughters, wives and mothers, destruction of our little left farmlands and increased farmer/herder crises as it is currently being experienced in other states of the country that have a good number of Fulani herdsmen.
The overwhelming basis for the rejection of RUGA project by most state governors, Social-cultural, and political groups, is that it does not, and will not suit the historical and ancestral heritage of their people. We equally hold the same position.
