Ahmed Aliyu sokoto, the man who lost to tambuwal with just 342 votes

Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu is a soft spoken handsome baby face man who slugged it out with Governor Tambuwal of Sokoto State in one of the most tension soaked gubernatorial elections, in perhaps, the history of Nigeria.

By George Onmonya Daniel

The politics of Sokoto, the seat of the Calipahate, has always been a fierce one since the return of democracy in 1999 in Nigeria. Political gladiators compete with everything to see who becomes governor. But of all the political dramas in Sokoto State since the creation of the state, none is close to the battle between Governor Aminu Waziri Tanbuwal and Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto.

When in 2015 Governor Tambuwal emerged as governor of Sokoto State, his deputy was Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu. As a grassroots man, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu prefers hardwork that impacts on the people than media jamboree. It was why he was chosen as Mr. Tambuwal’s running mate. He is a man that gets things done.

Before his first tenure elapsed Governor Tambuwal defected to the People Democratic Party (PDP) in what many All Progressive Congress (APC) members saw as betrayal. His deputy, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, refused to betray the trust of the APC. His loyalty did not go unnoiced. In 2019 he would be nominated by the APC to be their gubernatorial flag bearer.

Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko

With a mentor like former governor, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, popularly called Alu by the masses of Sokoto, it was simply game on. With Senator Alu behind Mr. Ahmed Aliyu in Sokoto no one doubted how competitive the gubernatorial election was going to be. And it was. Governor Tambuwal emerged winner with a meagre 342 votes.

Today Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto is Executive Secretary, Board of Trustee, Police Trust Fund. Born in 1970, Alhaji Aliyu has two master degrees and in 2018 was a PhD candidate, says his biography. He was accountants in Sokoto, Commissioner for eight years and as astute and experienced politician.

Even though he has not come out to officially declare anything, it is quite obvious that by 2023 he will be up and running the gubernatorial election under the APC, his party. With the backing of Senator Alu, it will be yet another very interesting one the Seat of the Caliphate
