Bukarti, Yobe’s foreign rice smuggling depot

How GEIDAM residents uncover one of Yobe’s biggest rice smuggling routes from Niger Republic to Nigeria

By George Onmonya Daniel

If you recall, few days ago, to be precise on Thursday 23 January 2020, I made a post on how Geidam residents in Yobe State were leaving the town on hearing Boko Haram terrorists were on their way. Some of the residents headed for the nearest town and that town is Bukarti, home of the former Governor of Yobe State. Bukarti is under Yunusari local government.

Mr. Mai Mala Buni is the Governor of Yobe State

On getting to Bukarti, they were stopped at the gate by the security, these are combined joint task force, because it was past curfew time. But on seeing the crowd from Geidam, the security had no choice than to allow them into Bukarti.

What was happening in Bukarti that night was surprising to all of them. Bukarti is the depot where smugglers smuggle all sorts goods from Niger Republic to Nigeria. From 10pm to 5am, goods starts arriving, especially rice, by 5am in the morning, these goods are into Nigeria on their way to their destinations.

In Yunusari Local Government in Yobe State, there is a bypass to Bayamari junction that link Geidam, Gaskia and Dapchi, so these good do not need to pass through Geidam.

Bukarti is the transit town where loading and offloading of rice and other smuggled good are taking place from 10pm, that’s curfew time, to 5am everyday.

Despite President Buhari’s closure of border, business is going on here as usual. Military sources within told me that customs and all the other forces stationed around get their own cut in the business and everyone is happy.

Border is wide opened here despite border closure, despite Boko Haram, against all odds, business is ongoing.
