Hon. Yakubu Dogara’s defection to the All Progressive Congress (APC) from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) came as a surprise to many. There was no hint that the former speaker of the house of representative had any problem with the PDP apart from having minor issues with the Governor of Bauchi State, Mr. Bala Mohammad, of course issues which are more of personal interests rather than state interests. Is that enough to push Dogara out of the PDP back to the APC which he left over a year ago saying the party has failed Nigerians?
Stories from grapevine has it that Hon. Yakubu Dogara left because of the Presidential election of 2023. If Tinubu will emerge as the candidate, the North will need a Christian Vice President and the APC is considering Hon. Yakubu Dogara. When this story is farfetched, reliably sources have told NEWISSUES that it is in fact a fact. But then 2023 is a long time and no one can exactly tell the mathematics.
What many see for now that is the plausible reason why Hon. Yakubu Dogara defected to the APC is that the APC is looking for a Chairman and they thought the best candidate would be Hon. Yakubu Dogara. This is because many are thinking the Northern Muslim politicians would prefer a Yoruba Christian as Presidential candidate so that they can have Hausa/Fulani candidate as his Vice President. Hon. Yakubu Dogara who is a Christian would not be the desire candidate for the Muslim North.
The fact remains that as Governor Mai Male Buni led Hon. Yakubu Dogara to the Presidential Villa yesterday to see President Buhari to formalise his defection to the APC, it’s quite clear that this is for personal interest. What did the APC promise Hon. Yakubu Dogara? This is the question on everyone’s lips today. What is in it for him?
We will all know with time. In a nation where every week now we expect one drama or the other, we may not have to wait too long.
