Is the government behind the genocide going on in Southern Kaduna? By Emma Onoja

In the last five years, there has been a systematic killing of the indigenous people of southern Kaduna by Fulani militia in a manner reminiscent of the pogrom against the Igbos in the late 1960. Today southern Kaduna has practically turned to a killing field where Fulani militia kill, main, destroy homes and means of livelihood with reckless abandon without let or hindrance from security forces. Blood and tears has been flowing endlessly in Southern Kaduna.

Both the federal and state governments incidentally headed by Fulani men have turned a blind eye to the genocide, suffering and plight of the people of southern Kaduna. Worse still, both the federal and state governments tend to take sides with the Fulani militia. Both governments have consistently maintained that the killings perpetrated by Fulani militia were reprisal killings. Assuming without conceding that the both governments were correct, where were both governments when the first killings took place? Why did they not bring the perpetrators of the first killings to book? Has resort to self help been given legal backing in southern Kaduna? Could that explains why no attack has been foiled and why nobody has been arrested and brought to book?

It is sad disheartening that there appears to be a conspiracy of silence across the country. Deafening silence from the media and civil societies. Even the vast majority of the citizens of this country on social media, are not without blame in this conspiracy of silence. The absence of public outcry against the genocide going on in southern Kaduna in the media, social media and on the streets of our major towns and cities seems to suggest that we have lost our humanity as a people! The premium we place on human lives is determined by relationships.

It is an open secret that one of president Buhari’s major objectives as president seems to be the advancement of the interest of his kinsmen the Fulanis over and other ethnic groups in the country. President Buhari was quick to deploy the might of the army to Zamfara state to confront cattle rustlers but to confront the Fulani militia killing and maiming across the country. The failure of both governments to confront, arrest and bring the perpetrators of the genocide in southern Kaduna to book appears to point to one irresistible conclusion; a subtle support for the Fulani militia.

The only crime of the southern Kaduna people is that their ancestors settled on fertile land which is rich for agriculture and animal husbandry. Their Fulani attackers want to take away their land; the very place they have lived for generations, their history and heritage!Today, it is southern Kaduna, tomorrow it will be another people. If we don’t speak up for southern Kaduna today, when the killings gets to our community, they will be no body to speak for us!
