Despite NCDC’s warnings and all the stories about the rising number of Coronavirus cases in Nigeria, the wearing of face mask and social distancing has totally collapsed in Abuja, the federal capital territory, and around Nigeria. Likewise the belief in the existence of the Coronavirus disease amongst members of the public.
On Friday, 26th June, 2020, NEWISSUES observed that the use of mask in Abuja mosques were not observed. More than half of the members who attended mosques in the mosques in Wuse 2, after Bannex Plaza, Al-Nur Mosque, and mosques around Abuja, did not comply to the use of mask, social distancing or use of sanitizers and washing of hands.
When NEWISSUES confronted a couple of them and asked them why they were not wearing mask the mosque, they just smiled. Few of them who decided to talk to our correspondents believe that Coronavirus is a scam. “Have you seen anyone with Coronavirus before?” One in particular asked. “If it’s rampant as they claim it would have been everywhere by now. They are using Coronavirus to make money.”
Sadly this narrative is what you hear all over Abuja. It is sad.
Today NEWISSUES went around Abuja and people are not comply with NCDC directions. In the beginning of the ease of the lockdown, people wore face masks all over, but now many have simply abandoning the face mask in public. There was fear that if you don’t carry face mask there may be some sort of reprimanding from authority or arrests, but all that has now become history. People simply have jettisoned the use of face mask. It’s like all the NCDC are saying and their warmings passes through one ear and comes out through the other. No one is listening.
“With the absence of a vaccine💉, non-pharmaceutical interventions such as use of face masks😷, physical distancing & hand hygiene 🧼 remain the most effective strategy to limit #COVID19 spread”
~Boss Mustapha, @PTFCOVID19 Chairman.

Last two week, Commissioner of Information, Abia State, John Okiyi Kalu, confirmed to NEWISSUES that a lot of people are refusing to follow simple directives in Abia State. He warned that the problem could escalate if people refuse to play their play in the war against COVID 19. Abia State Governor was tested positive of COVID 19 and has since handed over to his deputy to go for treatment.
Journalist and social media influencer from Maiduguri confirmed to NEWISSUES yesterday that when people are wearing their mask, a lot of people are also not wearing theirs in Borno State. In Kano, Kabiru Yahaya, convener, #IstandwithBuharu, told NEWISSUES that people laugh anyone they see with mask.
In OTUKPO Benue State and around Benue, it is the same. People are going about their daily business without protection and not caring, marriages go on with large crowd coming from all over the country, likewise burials and other public gathering events.
In many areas in Lagos, it is the same report. Jos is no different.
From the beginning many people in Abuja suburbs are not wearing mask. Even in police stations around Abuja, people are not wearing mask. After getting inside with your mask one can simply pull it off. There was no arrangement for people in police custodies to be protected.
Majority of those wear mask hang it on their chin with their mouth and nose exposed.
The COVID 19 committee has simply failed in convincing Nigerians of the reality of the pandemic.
NEWISSUES spoke to people from all demographies and the story is almost the same, with majority believing that the Coronavirus pandemic is not as the federal government make it look and that the government people are inflating the figures because they want to loot monies budgeted to curb the pandemic.
The communication of the federal government is not effective. You can recall one of Buhari’s Governor, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, accused the NCDC was trying infect people with Coronavirus so that they can say his State has Coronavirus. Governor Yahaya Bello earlier refused to agree that there was Coronavirus case in his state.
