The images of demolition of Asher Hotel in Kaduna, Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s State, over allegation that some people planned a sex party in the hotel, is not only preposterous but appalling. Who is Governor Nasir El-Rufai? I have asked myself this question over and over again. Who is this man?
Governor Nasir El-Rufai likes to identify as a liberal, but his actions says otherwise. So within twenty four hours he has investigated and decided someone’s property and investment was due for demolition on mere stories. Even if some people planned sex party in the premises, is that enough to demolish the property? It got me asking the question again? Who is Nasir El-Rufai?
I thought he would be someone, one of the governors who would make a difference when he was elected the governor of Kaduna State. I had read his Accidental Civil Servant and even though I am not his fan, I thought, well, for a change this is one person who sounds and looks like he would really make a difference. I have on my own never been a fan to Nasir El-Rufai or any other Nigerian politician for that matter. But I thought he did a great job in Abuja as FCT Minister where he was hobnobbing with pastors and Imams, Christians and Muslims, Southerners and Westerners. The first thing he did when he became governor was to regulate religious preaching in Kaduna State. But he went about it very wrongly and within one year he had lost it with that one. He lost it because of his refusal to target the problem head on but decided to play politics with it. Violence has never emanated from the church but you cannot say that about mosque in Arewa. Instead of being hard on his own people who are mostly the purveyors of such mayhem, he wanted it balanced and in the midst of it, it all looked like attacking people who are practicing their religion peacefully. He never bother about bringing the people of a divided city like Kaduna together anyhow.
Then he jumped into the Southern Kaduna killing imbroglio and completely blamed the people of Southern Kaduna for causing all the problems. He went back to history and try to falsely put all the blame on Southern Kaduna people. To stop the incessant killing of the Southern Kaduna people by Fulani gangs he quickly announced that he had gone to pay some sort of repartition to some Fulani people who where affected in the crisis. Till date he has not mentioned how much. The killing did not stop, it worsened. Today the same Fulani elements have completely organize a crime cartel that deals with kidnapping and wanton killings of people all across the North East.
All these gave me an idea who Governor Nasir El-Rufai really is. This man is not outraged by the killing going on in Southern Kaduna, he is not outraged, but look at the way he quickly went to attack a hotel and demolished it because of sex party that never even took place.
It shows what matters to Nasir El-Rufai is wrapped around religious crusade rather than real issues of development and inclusiveness.
Some of the things this government takes seriously surprises me. Nasir El-Rufai surprises me the most. What surround this whole demolition of hotel is religious bigotry and tribalism. I don’t know who owned the hotel, but I know it is definitely a Southerner.
Who is Governor Nasir El-Rufai? He looks to me a complete hypocrite.
