Lionel Messi became the most decorated player in football history on Sunday, when Argentina won the Copa America, surpassing former colleague Dani Alves.
Argentina beat Colombia 1-0 in the Copa America 2024 final at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, with Messi leaving the field early due to an injury.
By adding a second Copa America trophy to his cabinet, Messi set a new record for the most trophies won by a football player – 45 trophies with both club and country, surpassing Brazil's Alves.

Since breaking his international trophy drought in the senior squad in 2021, Messi has won four trophies with Argentina in the previous three years, including the Copa America twice in 2021 and 2024, the Finalissima once in 2022, and the FIFA World Cup once in 2022.
Before winning the Copa America in 2021, Messi won gold at the Olympics in 2008 and the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2005 with Argentina's younger squads. While the 37-year-old has won six national team titles, he has 39 club titles.
Messi, who won his first club championship with Barcelona during the 2004-05 season, embarked on a trophy-winning rampage with the Catalan club, winning a total of 34 trophies, including 10 La Liga and four Champions League wins.
Even after leaving Barcelona, Messi continued to win trophies overseas, first in France with Paris Saint-Germain and then in the United States with Inter Miami, where he could add even more to his collection.
