Few months ago, a friends in Abuja when discussing the dire situation Nigerian economy was and how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies is biting and causing hardship to Nigerians, told me that there is no longer traffic jam at Gudu-Ebaino Road and Effab junction. “It is usually empty now during rush hour. Effab junction is known for gridlock every weekdays from around 6pm to 10:30pm, even weekends sometimes. “Most people park their cars at home nowadays, even big men. Most times petrol is even scarce. You cannot get it with your money. You people that left the country are very lucky.” I have heard the “You people that left the country are very lucky part” from many people even before him. It seems to be the new song on many people’s lips these days. So I decided to talk to people around Nigeria.
When one cannot ascertain the percentage, it is true that the fuel price hikes due to the removal of subsidy by the Tinubu led government that allows the price of fuel follow that of the global market, as the government usually chorused, to save money for development, as they usually campaigned, has stopped many Nigerians from using their vehicles.
People who have no vehicles too are affected as their movements are now restricted due to cost of transportation. “If where you are going to is not really important, most people don’t go out anymore.
In a viral video at the top of this write up, you can see a man complaining about how over N71,000 (Seventy one thousand naira) petrol has not filled his tank. That is above the recent approved munimum wage by the federal government.
From Kano to Abuja, Lagos to Porharcourt, Sokoto to Calabar, all over the nation, North, South, East and West, it is the same story.
